On a recent trip to South Africa mission volunteers met a teacher at this poor rural school who heard that American nurses were arriving. She asked if our services could be lent to her school because many of the children had serious health concerns and were unable to afford medical care.
When we returned to the US, letters were written to South African Department of Education officials and they promptly responded. A new school has been built for the learners. A building to house a library and a computer lab has been erected but lacks books and computers to complete the project.
Children with the greatest nutritional needs are being provided with Sejo, a fortified porridge.
Plans are underway to transform the old school into a community center where job training skills can be offered and the expansion of an income generating sewing project can be accomplished.
