With an unemployment rate close to 40%, the poor become inventive with ways to make a living. This woman is sorting through trash,
retrieving cardboard that may be used for makeshift shelters.
There are overcrowded communities where people live in homes constructed
of tin and cardboard with dirt floors and no running water or electricity. Homes are held together with chicken wire and roofs held
down with old tires. The homes are one to two rooms and may house as many as ten to fourteen family members. Orphans are taken in
by neighbors if there are no surviving family members.
